It is amazing to think how much has been accomplished from that beginning in May, 2007, yet overwhelming to realize the monumental task and commitment it takes to continue to help these children of Mount Barclay.
With great gratitude, some very generous contributions have been made, which has enabled us to oversee the starting of the school. Grades K2 through grade five started school in September, 2007, and they are now into their second year.
So many wonderful things have evolved from the beginnings of Mount Barclay Christian School. The original open-air structure of the school, erected in the summer of 2007, is now being enclosed. This will prevent any further snakes from entering the school with the children!
The original kitchen, which prepares the meals for more than 600 children each day, was open fire, open air, covered by blue plastic tarps when the rains came. Again, gratefully, donations have allowed the kitchen to be enclosed. In addition, funds were donated to support a nurse to care for the inevitable ailments and fevers that so many come to school with each day! The water provided for the school and cooking was originally an open air pit, making the children vulnerable to such diseases as typhoid and malaria. A well was donated by a wonderful Christian organization. Not only that, but they committed to drilling 20 more wells throughout the small villages that comprise Mount Barclay. Things that we take for granted here, just are so amazing to be able to provide at Mount Barclay.
When our school started, some of the children coming from many miles away, had to walk along a busy road. But one of our supportive church groups raised the funds to build a bridge to cross a small river that became impassible in the rainy times.
Another big accomplishment is the completion of a large storage building located near the school building. The building provides secure storage for the huge purchases of rice each month. Another section of the permanent storage building houses a medical clinic and at least one large church has donated some medical supplies that the Mount Barclay residents can receive.
The children go to school from early in the morning and end their day at 12:30 with their meal. The afternoon sees our school building utilized for another purpose, in that it is providing a large training program for young women who are victoms of the war, in that they were displaced from their families and also have little hope for a brighter future. Thanks to the generosity of more than one church group, this is developing into a wonderful program as well. The young women can receive basic education as well as training in one of several trades, allowing them possible employment to be able to provide for themselves and their families. We are grateful beyond words for all of this and all that has been accomplished in such a short time. Yet the needs and responsibilities to continue to help are overwhelming and seem nearly impossible at times--but we persevere!
PLAN’s main focus remains the school and feeding program. We provide the teacher’s salaries, provide diesel for the school bus that picks up many of the children so that they do not have to walk so far each morning to school, and the food used to feed more than 600 children one meal a day, six days a week. We are eternally grateful to those who donate to this wonderful work to help these children of Mount Barclay have better and brighter tomorrows!

Most gratefully,
Judy Elkins
